KabarOto.com - George Russell has successfully secured the first pole position under the new F1 regulations in the qualifying session of the 2026 Australian F1 Grand Prix held at the Albert Park circuit.
The Mercedes driver shone since Q1 and achieved the fastest lap time of 1:18.518 seconds, outpacing his teammate, Kimi Antonelli.
The successful lockout of the front row by Mercedes proves that the team has optimized their new power unit system, which now has a 50:50 balance of electricity and combustion energy.
The qualifying session was marked by a dramatic incident when reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, had a massive crash at the first turn during Q1, midway through the session.
Verstappen's Red Bull RB22 had its rear end locked up while braking, causing Verstappen to spin and crash into the barrier.
As a result, the reigning world champion will start from the back of the grid, delivering a crushing blow to Red Bull's chances in the season-opening race.
"My body is fine, the scan showed no injuries. I don't know what happened; when I braked, the rear tires locked up, and it was hard to control the car at high speed. Unfortunately, there was a lot of damage to the car, so we'll try to figure out what happened and do better for the race," Verstappen explained.
However, Red Bull's disappointment was somewhat alleviated by the impressive performance of their young driver, Isack Hadjar.
Hadjar surprised everyone by securing third place, beating Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and local hero Oscar Piastri.
Hadjar showed incredible adaptability to the new 2026 cars, which are more agile but have lower grip levels than their predecessors.
Mid-field competition looked fierce, with very narrow gaps between the cars. Racing Bull displayed enormous potential through Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, both of whom made it into the top ten.
In the meantime, Lewis Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, will start from seventh place after briefly leading the Q1 timesheet but failing to improve during the crucial Q3 phase.
Commenting on his performance, George Russell expressed his delight with the W17 car.
"This is an incredible day. We knew there was a lot of potential in this car, but you never really know until the first qualifying session starts. This car was truly 'alive' today, especially as the track temperature dropped," Russell said confidently.
In contrast, Kimi Antonelli, who secured second place, acknowledged the significant challenge of managing the battery energy.
"This track is very energy-hungry, making the overtake mode very strong but also causing chaos. My main focus is to have a clean start tomorrow," Antonelli said.
Isack Hadjar also expressed his optimism despite acknowledging the reliability challenges.
"I'm really happy to be competing for a better result this year. If we can make it to the finish line tomorrow, that's already a great start," Hadjar exclaimed.
