A 6.2-magnitude earthquake shook the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday, prompting authorities to issue alerts and monitor aftershocks.
The quake, with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale, struck offshore in the Mindanao region at 5:18 pm local time (0918 GMT). According to the USGS, the epicentre was located near the Philippine Trench, an active seismic zone.
Tremors were felt across parts of Mindanao and surrounding areas, causing strong shaking and brief panic. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 112 kilometres (69.5 miles), indicating a moderately deep seismic event.
A tsunami warning was issued briefly for nearby coastal regions, including parts of Indonesia, the Philippines, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea, before being monitored and assessed by authorities.
The Philippines is prone to frequent earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', one of the most seismically active zones in the world.
Residents in affected coastal and high-risk areas were urged to move to safer locations and follow evacuation instructions as a precaution against aftershocks.
Emergency services in the Philippines advised residents to follow official government and disaster agency channels for updates and local emergency assistance information.
