A Backdoor to Legal Sports Betting: Prediction Markets in Alabama

New guidelines revealed by the Trump administration have cleared the way for prediction markets in all 50 states, effectively making sports betting legal in Alabama.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) recently issued proposed rules that, while limiting some sports-related contracts, do not classify sports prediction markets as illegal gambling.

According to CFTC Chair Michael Selig, the focus is on restricting non-sports contracts involving events like wars, assassinations, and terrorist attacks. Selig stated that the CFTC aims to 'protect the integrity of our regulated markets without standing in the way of responsible innovation.'

Experts say that while this development does not have a significant impact on the sports industry, it may pave the way for legalized sports betting in Alabama. Industry giants like FanDuel and DraftKings have already joined the prediction market scene.

However, critics argue that these platforms allow sports wagering in states that have not legalized traditional sports betting, resulting in lost state revenue.

Prediction markets have changed the conversation around legalized sports betting, and this development may be the final piece needed to get it on the ballot in Alabama.
