A New Chapter for CSU Monterey Bay: Interim President Carlos Vargas-Aburto Takes the Helm

As the academic year draws to a close, California State University Monterey Bay (CSU Monterey Bay) is bracing for a new era of leadership. With the departure of President Vanya Quiñones to Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Chancellor Mildred Garcia has appointed a seasoned education leader to take the reins: Carlos Vargas-Aburto. The newly appointed interim president brings a wealth of experience to the position, having spent over three decades in higher education, from faculty member to president.

Vargas-Aburto's impressive academic resume includes a Bachelor of Science in physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, as well as two master's degrees in aerospace science and physics, and a doctorate degree from the University of Michigan. His leadership experience spans institutions across the United States, including a decade-long tenure as president of Southeast Missouri State University.

Speaking on his appointment, Quiñones expressed his confidence in Vargas-Aburto's ability to lead the institution forward, saying, "I am so excited and believe that he is the right person, with the right experience, to fit with the Otter RAFT. He has the values and the experience to keep our momentum going. The university will be in good hands."

Vargas-Aburto will assume the role of interim president on August 1, pending approval of his compensation by the CSU Board of Trustees in July. In the interim, Andrew Larson, CSUMB's provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, has been appointed to serve as executive in charge, beginning July 1.

Looking ahead, Vargas-Aburto has outlined his vision for the institution, emphasizing the importance of continuity and momentum. "Every institution has its own community, its own momentum and its own story still being written," he said. "I am looking forward to contributing to the great work already happening here and moving forward together."

As the Otter RAFT looks to its future, the appointment of Vargas-Aburto is seen as a positive step towards stability and growth. The university's commitment to academic excellence and community engagement is likely to continue under his leadership, as he works to build on the momentum established during Quiñones' tenure.

While there are certainly challenges ahead, Vargas-Aburto's extensive experience and commitment to the CSUM community offer a sense of reassurance. As he takes the helm, the institution's students, faculty, and staff can look forward to a bright and exciting future under his guidance.

The appointment of Vargas-Aburto marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the history of CSU Monterey Bay. The CSU community is eager to see the impact his leadership will have on the institution and the wider community it serves.

Stay tuned for updates and insights on this developing story, as CSU Monterey Bay embarks on a new era of leadership and growth.

CSUB's new interim president has a deep understanding of the institution's community-driven spirit. "The Otter RAFT is a community that values collaboration, creativity, and inclusivity. As its new leader, I am honored to continue this legacy and support the university's ongoing quest for academic excellence
