'A year ago today I was begging the nurses to let me go home for my birthday because I had been stuck in a hospital room for 50 or so days,' Askren recalled.

'They refused to let me go home because I couldn't stand up or go to the bathroom under my own power.'

Askren's journey has not only been about overcoming his health issues but also about rediscovering his passion for wrestling. In May 2025, he was the first wrestler signed by RAF, and although he was sidelined temporarily, he has now made a triumphant return to the wrestling world.

As Askren prepares to face Belal Muhammad, he is well aware of the significance of this match. 'This is a one-off,' he emphasized. 'When RAF told me they were coming to Milwaukee on 18 July, which is my birthday and my home town, something spoke to me and said I need to wrestle.'
