AC/DC Takes to Madison's Streets: Local Business Owner Weighs In on Upcoming Concert

As the sun-baked summer days give way to balmy nights, the air thickens with the promise of live music, drawing in crowds from far and wide. This Sunday, rock legends AC/DC will take the Camp Randall Stadium stage, bringing with them their iconic sound and a reputation for delivering high-energy performances. For local business owner Brian Hoelker, owner of The Red Zone Madison, the concert is a welcome respite from the slower summer months, providing a much-needed boost to his establishment's coffers.

"It's a chance to take a football-esque atmosphere and maybe a smaller scale and just have it during the summer when it's a little bit slower," Hoelker mused, as he reflected on the potential windfall. "The students are gone, and there's just not as much going on, making it the perfect time to inject some life into the area." With thousands of fans expected to converge on the venue, nearby bars and restaurants along Regent Street are poised to reap the benefits of this concentrated influx of visitors.

Events at Camp Randall have a proven track record of drawing in large crowds, with the added bonus of generating much-needed revenue for local businesses. This particular event, however, comes at a time when the city is bracing itself for sweltering conditions, with temperatures and air quality expected to reach uncomfortable levels. "Events like this highlight the challenges of hosting large gatherings in our climate," said Hoelker, who is taking steps to mitigate the impact on his business.

The Red Zone initially planned to open its beer garden for the concert, but given the forecast, Hoelker has reconsidered, opting to provide a reprieve from the elements by inviting patrons to enjoy the air-conditioned comfort of the indoor space. "We've got a large enough footprint that we should still be able to have a lot of people in here without subjecting them to the issues that that are going on," he explained, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing patron comfort.

Despite the logistical challenges presented by the weather, Hoelker remains optimistic about the potential for a positive experience for concert-goers. "I really hope it's not that bad because I want people to have a great experience, but I think having such a large indoor occupancy and the way we're situated, I think it does definitely help us a lot just having the extra area inside for people to come into and just take a respite from the elements is usually a very big plus for us," he said, highlighting the adaptability of his business.

Fans are advised to take precautions, staying hydrated throughout the event and keeping a watchful eye on current air-quality conditions. The concert is poised to be a significant event in the city's live music calendar, marking the continuation of major live performances at Camp Randall Stadium following a roughly 30-year hiatus.

"When Camp Randall hosts big events like this, it really brings to life the sense of community that defines Madison," Hoelker noted, underscoring the importance of these gatherings in fostering social connections and economic vitality.
