Elina Svitolina vs Tereza Valentova · Round 2 · Cincinnati Tennis.com - A nail-biting encounter...

Carlos Alcaraz has spoken out about his defeat to Jannik Sinner in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters. The Spanish tennis player admitted that he didn't perform well in key moments, which ultimately determined the outcome of the match.
'I'd say that in the important moments, crucial points, I didn't play well,' Alcaraz stated. 'I think I had a lot of opportunities in the match that I didn't capitalize on. So many games, points, so many 15-30, 0-30.'
'I think in the first tie-break, I didn't play well and I think he just played incredible tennis when it mattered most. I think that was the key today.'
Despite initially taking the lead in both sets, Alcaraz was unable to convert his advantage into a win. A crucial moment occurred during the first set tie-break, where he committed a double fault that proved costly.
Alcaraz also led 3-1 in the second set but failed to maintain his momentum. By the end of the match, he had committed 45 unforced errors, a high number for a final match.
'I think the conditions today were very tough, as I consider myself to be playing great tennis when the wind is blowing strong. Today's wind was a bit tricky because it wasn't just coming from one direction,' Alcaraz explained.
'The wind was swirling. One point you're playing with the wind in your favor and the next point it's the opposite. So it was tough to understand where the wind was coming from.'
This loss has also updated the head-to-head record between the two players, with Sinner now leading in their recent encounters and narrowing the gap overall, including on clay courts.
Although he lost, Alcaraz wasn't too surprised by Sinner's performance. He believes his rival has been continuously improving, especially on clay surfaces.
'We've seen Jannik's level on clay and I think he's developed a lot from year to year,' Alcaraz said about Sinner, who has moved up to the No.1 spot in the world rankings.
'I think he's reached a level on clay that will be very dangerous for everyone. I'm not surprised at all, because we could see his level of play last year at Roland Garros.'
Despite the outcome in Monte-Carlo, Alcaraz's overall performance this season has been solid, with a record of 21 wins and only 3 losses.
Next, Alcaraz will head to the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona, hoping to bounce back and return to his winning ways.
