The Pearl River County in Mississippi was gripped by a catastrophic flash flood emergency on Thursday, with the Anchor Lake Dam struggling to stay afloat amidst heavy rainfall.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for the county, cautioning residents to be prepared for potential catastrophic flooding due to the compromised dam.
NWS officials stated that the Anchor Lake Dam failed at approximately 3:30 p.m., causing severe flash flooding downstream along the East Hobolochitto Creek. However, emergency officials clarified that the dam's structural integrity remained intact, although it was facing immense pressure due to excessive water levels.
According to Pearl River County emergency officials, approximately 55,000 people were at risk of being affected by the flooding, with the evacuation zone spanning from Interstate 59 to Caesar Road. Residents in the surrounding areas were advised to evacuate to higher ground immediately, as the situation continued to escalate.
Willie McKercher, the chief of the Mississippi Dam Safety Program, noted that 6 to 8 inches of rain had fallen in the lake within a span of 24 hours, causing the water levels to rise near the top of the 60-year-old dam. Despite the efforts to stabilize the dam, the risk of sudden collapse lingered throughout the day.
'There is no imminent threat of dam collapse today,' McKercher assured, citing the deployment of siphon devices to lower the lake level by five feet. However, as the weekend approaches, concerns surrounding the impending rains have escalated.
Local officials scrambled to secure additional equipment to aid in the dam's stabilization and manage the rising water levels. While the initial evacuation of approximately 30 homes proved successful in safeguarding its residents, the situation remained precarious as night fell on Thursday.
This development underscores the critical importance of timely dam maintenance and effective crisis management during severe weather conditions.
Mississippi's infrastructure has historically been prone to natural disasters, with the 2019-2020 winter season being a stark reminder of the region's vulnerability to extreme weather events.
The ongoing efforts to stabilize the Anchor Lake Dam demonstrate the importance of collaboration between local, state, and federal agencies in mitigating the effects of climate-related catastrophes.
As the weather forecast predicts more rain in the region, residents and authorities alike remain on high alert, bracing for the potential consequences of the compromised dam.
