We are thrilled to kick off the 2026/27 season with a resounding victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield, securing our 18th Shield title with a 3-0 win. This dominant display at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff marks a promising start to the campaign, and we couldn't be more pleased with the team's performance.
The game got off to an incredible start, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring in just 24 seconds, showcasing his lightning-fast speed and agility. This early goal set the tone for the match, and we continued to press ahead, searching for more opportunities to add to our lead. Kai Havertz soon doubled our advantage on 28 minutes, showcasing his clinical finishing skills, and the German star has now been directly involved in more goals against Manchester City than any other side in his club career.
Our 3-0 win is the biggest margin of victory in a Community Shield game since 2014, when we beat the same opponent by the exact same scoreline. This victory is also a testament to our team's growth and consistency, having only lost two of our nine matches against Manchester City since the start of the 2023/24 season. Moreover, this is Enzo Maresca's joint-heaviest defeat as a manager in English football, having only once previously lost by a 3+ goal margin.
The win is especially sweet for Martin Odegaard, who secured his first goal since December due to an injury-plagued 2025/26 season. The skipper played a vital role in the team's success, completing the most passes (55/58) and dribbles (3/3) of any Arsenal player, as well as winning possession the most times for us (9). His impressive performance and clinical finishing skills will undoubtedly boost our confidence heading into the new season.
Our success in the Community Shield is also a testament to our team's ability to adapt and thrive under pressure. We went straight at Manchester City from kick-off, exploiting any gaps in their defense and creating scoring opportunities. Our passing and movement were superb, and we took advantage of any mistakes made by the opposition. This resilience and determination will be crucial in our bid to retain the Premier League title.
Speaking of which, the Premier League gets underway on Friday night, and we'll take on newly-promoted Coventry City in our title defense. We'll then have a 10-day wait before we head to Aston Villa on Monday, 31 August. Our next league action will be against Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on Sunday, September 6. We're looking forward to a thrilling season ahead, and this win has certainly set the tone for success.
The win also sees our 3-0 victory being the biggest result in a Community Shield clash since the 2014 fixture, with many records broken in this particular match. Riccardo Calafiori's goal after 23 seconds is the first scored in the opening minute of the Community Shield since Bobby Owen for Manchester City against West Bromwich Albion in 1968. Our opener in this match is the quickest of the 668 goals we have netted under Mikel Arteta across all competitions.
The win is also a welcome one for the new generation of fans who were treated to the style and finesse displayed by the team. The match provided plenty of goals, action and football which is why this event has become an annual tradition in the calendar and we are proud to be part of it.
