Jeff Metcalf, the father of slain Texas teenager Austin Metcalf, was heard using a racist slur to refer to his son's convicted killer Karmelo Anthony during a recent podcast appearance.
The slur, which referred to 'watermelon,' is a well-documented anti-Black racist trope in American history.
Metcalf made the comments after telling the courtroom during his victim impact statement that the case had nothing to do with race. Both the prosecution and the defense had also told jurors that race was not a factor in the case.
Metcalf did not stop there, also attacking Anthony's parents, Andrew "Drew" Anthony and Kala Hayes. He called them "grifters" and "cowards," suggested child protective services should check on their other children, and implied they profited from the case.
A crowdfunding campaign for Anthony's defense raised over $630,000 online before it was shut down following the conviction.
The comments came during a podcast appearance on the JinxedSip podcast with host Sarah Fields, per TMZ.
These racist comments by Austin Metcalf's father are disturbing and highlight the deep-seated racial prejudices in some parts of America.
