Ayrton Senna, known as the 'King of Monaco,' had to wait for his first win at the challenging Monte Carlo circuit before his storied relationship with the iconic Formula 1 track began. This turning point finally arrived in 1987 at the Monaco Grand Prix, where Senna led his Lotus Honda team to a historic victory.
That win wasn't just a personal triumph for Senna, but marked the start of an unprecedented record that would forever tie his name to Monaco. In his third season with Lotus, the season of 1987 proved to be a pivotal moment in his Formula 1 career.
Lotus, powered by the highly competitive turbo Honda engine, was a force to be reckoned with in 1987, competing against top teams like Williams-Honda and McLaren-TAG Porsche. Senna, renowned for his exceptional speed, had already collected several Grand Prix wins but still lacked a victory at Monaco, despite consistently impressive performances.
During the intense competition, Senna continuously pushed his rivals to their limits while perfectly utilizing the demanding traits of Monaco, requiring utmost concentration over more than two hours of racing.
An opportunity arose when the Williams-Honda driver, Nigel Mansell, who was then leading the race, experienced technical difficulties and was forced to retire, paving the way for Senna to take the top position.
With the lead, Senna showcased his trademark skills on the street circuit. Exhibiting a well-coordinated pace and minimal mistakes, he successfully maintained his lead until the checkered flag was waved.
The Monaco victory in 1987 marked Senna's first win at the iconic circuit and his first win for Honda as a power unit provider in Monaco since returning to the sport.
For Lotus, this victory served as a testament to their ability to remain contenders against Williams' dominance in the top tier, and signaled the beginning of one of the most iconic stories in Formula 1 history.
Following his inaugural win in Monaco, Senna would go on to claim five more Monaco Grand Prix wins in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993. With six wins under his belt, he solidified his reputation as the most successful driver in Monaco's Grand Prix history.
