Kota Bandung (ANTARA) - The Bandung Branch of the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has predicted El Nino will still have the potential to reduce the rain intensity in several areas of West Java from June 9 to 15, 2026.
BMKG Bandung Chief Edi Wibowo said, based on the latest global climate analysis, El Nino indicated by an index 3.4 of Niño +0.69 and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) -18.9 is still influencing the rain pattern in West Java.
“El Nino still has a potential to reduce the rain in some areas of Indonesia, including West Java. Meanwhile the effects of Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on Indonesia are forecasted to be not significant in a week ahead,” said Edi in Bandung, Tuesday.
Regardless, BMKG mentioned the possibility of rain with light to moderate intensity still exists in certain areas of West Java, especially in the afternoon to evening.
Aside from that, moderate to heavy rain with lightning or thunder and strong winds remain to be a possibility in certain areas of West Java with a relatively short duration.
Edi stated that his party has issued several recommendations to the community and the local government on the potential for hydro-meteorological hazards, such as flooding, landslides, and fallen trees.
“We advise the community to remain vigilant and update weather information from BMKG. Understand the potential hazards in your surroundings and take steps to reduce the risks,” he said.
He explained that during the transition season like this, the community needs to be more vigilant of the potential for extreme weather that can occur at any moment, such as moderate to heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning.
According to him, simple mitigation efforts can be made by the community to reduce the risk, including not littering the streets, keeping the environment clean, and fortifying community cooperation in keeping the environment.
“The community is expected to identify the potential hazards in their surroundings and begin to understand how to reduce the risks, for example, by not littering in public spaces, maintaining cleanliness, and working together in community clean-up and environmental management,” said Edi.
BMKG stated despite the trend of rain intensity in West Java being downward due to the influence of El Nino, the potential for extreme weather of heavy rain with lightning or thunder and strong winds remains to be watched in the coming days.
