BMKG Forecasting the Impact of El Nino in DKI Jakarta, Hotter Weather Expected in September-October

BMKG predicts that the El Nino phenomenon will soon become active in the middle of 2026 to early 2027. BMKG revealed the impact of the El Nino phenomenon in the DKI Jakarta area.

"In general, the impact of El Nino in DKI is the same as in other areas of Java, we will experience a longer dry season," said BMKG Climatology Deputy Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan at a press conference, Wednesday (10/6/2026).

He stated that the northern part of Jakarta has already entered the dry season since May, while the southern part of Jakarta will enter the dry season in June-July. Therefore, the impact of El Nino in Jakarta is a longer dry season.

"For the northern part of DKI, it has already entered its dry season since May, the southern part will follow in June-July, so the impact is a longer dry season," he said.

The impact of El Nino on temperature is predicted to experience hot or sweltering weather. This is because the sun is predicted to pass directly over the island of Java in September-October.

"As for temperature, usually DKI Jakarta will feel hotter if it's called by Javanese people around the end of September to October because the sun exactly passes over the top of the island of Java," he said.

It is known that BMKG predicts that the peak of the dry season will occur in July to September 2026. BMKG predicts that the impact of the dry season in DKI can cause dry air due to minimal rainfall.

"Around July-August, the dry air that occurs due to minimal rainfall also accompanied by low humidity. So it is a characteristic of the island of Java when the dry season peaks, then the temperature will rise in late September and October," he said.

Then, will El Nino affect air quality? BMKG said that the minimal rainfall does not necessarily make its pollutants rise, but it causes pollutants not to be washed away.

"Actually, without rain, it's not the quality of the air that's rising, its pollutants are rising, but its pollutants are not washed away, because we've reduced our rainfall. The source of pollutants is always there through human activities such as transportation, factories, power plants, etc., so the absence of rain does not help us to improve air quality because it is not assisted by atmospheric cleansing by rain," he said.

Previously, BMKG predicted that the El Nino phenomenon would soon become active in the middle of 2026 to early 2027. BMKG asked stakeholders to immediately take anticipatory and mitigating actions of the impact of El Nino that can affect the reduced rainfall.

"The El Nino prediction that occurs from the middle of 2026 with the intensity of El Nino in the moderate category of 98% and the strong category of 62%," said BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani at a press conference, Wednesday (10/6/2026).

BMKG asked the government to immediately take anticipatory and mitigating actions of the impact of El Nino that can affect the reduced rainfall.
