Boyle Heights Cold-Storage Facility Fire: A Complex Emergency Unfolds in Los Angeles

The fire broke out initially on Wednesday at the 491,000-square-foot warehouse in the 1400 block of South Los Palos Street, forcing nearby residents and businesses to shelter in place due to an ammonia leak and thick smoke. The intensity of the flames and danger posed by the ammonia leak required crews to pull away from the structure and assume a defensive posture, pouring water on the building from the exterior.

LAFD hose lines could not reach all parts of the blaze, prompting water-dropping helicopters to be brought in to help halt the flames. Thousands of gallons of water were dumped onto the building, a tactic used in only a handful of previous incidents, according to LAFD Chief Jaime Moore.

'This is a very unique situation for crews to use water-dropping helicopters for a structure fire,' Chief Moore explained. 'However, the size of the warehouse necessitated the aerial operation.' The fire on Wednesday rapidly spread across solar panels on the roof, prompting a Particle Pollution Advisory issued by the Air Quality Management District, which has since been extended through Saturday.

On Friday, the fire flared up again, with changing winds re-igniting hotspots inside the building. The Los Angeles Fire Department said crews had been pre-positioned in anticipation of the changing conditions. 'There are still some remaining forklifts inside the building,' Battalion Chief Nick Ferrari acknowledged, 'and we are making a stand to prevent the fire from entering that building to avoid a lithium-ion battery hazard.'

The LAFD is conducting overhaul operations, with crews battling the blaze and removing forklifts equipped with lithium batteries from inside the facility. 'It's a very aggressive operation,' Mayor Karen Bass commended firefighters at a news conference on Friday evening. 'We will do everything we can to end this situation as soon as possible.'

The Pecan Recreation Center has been set up as a smoke relief center for residents in need of a place to take shelter indoors. City officials are advising residents to keep their pets inside and to wear a mask if they must go outside. LAFD officials are monitoring air quality and urge individuals with sensitivity to smoke to continue monitoring air quality alerts and avoid unnecessary exposure.

With the fire ongoing since Wednesday and the changing conditions, the incident poses complex challenges for the LAFD and the community. The facility offers cold storage, customs brokerage, drayage, and blast freezing, according to its website, suggesting a significant presence of high-risk materials. The fact that a similar incident occurred at the same facility in August 2024 raises concerns about the root causes of the fire and the necessary steps to be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains crucial for residents and businesses in the area to stay informed and adhere to the instructions provided by the LAFD and local authorities. The safety of the public remains the top priority, and efforts are being made to contain the fire and mitigate its impact on air quality.
