Brasil Left Heartbroken as Argentina Qualifies for the 2026 World Cup

BUENOS AIRES, investortrust.id - Brazil captain Marquinhos and his teammates tried to lift their spirits after becoming witnesses to Argentina's heartbreaking defeat in the 2026 World Cup qualifying match in South America's zone at Estadio Monumental, Buenos Aires, on Wednesday (26/3/2025) local time.

Brazil played against El Clasico de las Americas without their injured star Neymar, while Argentina was also without their beloved Lionel Messi.

The result saw Argentina take a quick lead in the fourth minute, thanks to a loose ball that Julian Alvarez shot into the goal. Just eight minutes later, Enzo Fernandez's freekick gave Argentina a comfortable two-goal lead.

Argentina kept their lead intact until the end of the match, securing their spot in the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Brazil managed to narrow the gap to one goal in the 26th minute thanks to Matheus Cunha, but a late Alexis Mac Allister goal in the 37th minute sealed the loss for Brazil. Argentina scored once more with Giovani Simeone in the 71st minute, taking the final score to 4-1.

The loss was a bitter pill for Brazil to swallow, especially as it was witnessed by their rival's qualification to the World Cup. The Brazilian team, however, showed resilience and vowed to bounce back.

"We can all do better than this. It's not just about the coach, it's about us as a team," said Marquinhos in an interview with ESPN, trying to shift the blame from the coach to the team.

"It wasn't just a coach mistake, but also player error. We must think better. They (Argentina) have also had their fair share of struggles but they managed to overcome them. We can do the same. We must rise to the challenge," added Marquinhos.

"There's still a long way to go and other games left to play. We must learn from this defeat and work harder to reach the 2026 World Cup," concluded Marquinhos with a sense of determination.
