DETROIT — The Detroit City Council is gearing up to vote on a proposal that could temporarily restrict minors in certain areas during the Ford Fireworks festival.
The proposed curfew, which would take effect at 8 p.m. on June 22 and remain in place until 6 a.m. the following morning, is aimed at preventing incidents and ensuring public safety.
Detroit Police 1st Assistant Chief Franklin Hayes cited recent incidents across the country as justification for the measure. He pointed to a festival in Dearborn Heights that was shut down due to mass gatherings of unsupervised teens.
City Council has approved similar curfews in previous years, but this year's proposal comes as communities nationwide struggle with the growing trend of 'teen takeovers.'
Residents who spoke at the Public Health and Safety Committee meeting had mixed opinions on the curfew, with some opposing it and others supporting it to ensure safety for all.
The full City Council is expected to vote on the temporary curfew at its meeting on Tuesday, which begins at 10 a.m.
