Breaking the Record: Seattle Sizzles Under World Cup Pressure

First-time visitors in town for Seattle’s World Cup Monday game got a reality check – a scorching one at that. Gone are the days of rain, fog, and the infamous 'Juneuary'.

As the first men’s soccer game kicked off at Lumen Field, temperatures at nearby Sea-Tac Airport skyrocketed to 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, shattering a 1963 record of 88 degrees for the warmest day in June.

Egypt struck first in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw with Belgium. Interestingly, Cairo also hit 90 degrees, proving that the World Cup fever knows no bounds – neither does the heat!

This marks the 15th consecutive year Seattle has seen a 90-degree day, a feat that only four years in this century have not managed. The last time this didn't happen was in 2011.

Average historical data suggests the first 90-degree day usually hits around July 3.

A heat advisory remains in place for much of Western Washington until 5 a.m. Tuesday, so it's a good idea to stay hydrated and bring that umbrella... just kidding!
