Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is set to apply for entry into the NFL supplemental draft as controversy continues to surround his eligibility to play in college this season.
A temporary injunction granted by a Texas judge on June 8 could have cleared the way for Sorsby to play for Texas Tech this fall, but the NFL has not commented on his status, stating that he would have to be granted entry in order to be eligible to be selected in the supplemental draft later this summer.
Sorsby took to social media on Monday night to address his situation, stating that he remains fully committed to being the best he can be, both on and off the field.
The quarterback's eligibility was put into question after it was revealed that he had made thousands of impermissible bets on pro and college sports, totaling at least $90,000 during his time at Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech.
A Texas Tech judge granted Sorsby a temporary leave of absence to enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction, but the Big 12 Conference has filed a federal complaint warning the Texas attorney general to stay out of the case.
The quarterback's future remains uncertain, with his attorneys reportedly planning to withdraw their lawsuit on Tuesday, making him ineligible under the NCAA's ruling.
Sorsby was one of the biggest names in this year's transfer portal, leaving Cincinnati for a reported $5 million from Texas Tech, which last season won its first Big 12 championship and made the playoff.
In 35 career games, including 31 starts, Sorsby passed for 7,208 yards and 60 touchdowns, along with 1,295 rushing yards and 22 TDs.
