Brian Ortega vs. Renato Moicano: A Rivalry Reborn at UFC 331

The world of mixed martial arts is abuzz with the highly anticipated rematch between top-ranked lightweight contenders Brian Ortega and Renato Moicano, set to take place at UFC 331 on September 19, 2026, at the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles. This grudge match was initially scheduled for UFC 326 in March, but Ortega was forced to withdraw due to injuries. Now, with a 10-pound weight difference, the two fighters are ready to put their rivalry to rest and prove their respective strengths in the Octagon.

Ortega, a stalwart of Southern California's fight scene, has been working tirelessly to regain his footing in the rankings, having previously faced off against featherweight champions Max Holloway in 2018 and Alexander Volkanovski in 2021, where he came frustratingly close to claiming the title. Moicano, however, has not shied away from the top contenders, as evidenced by his recent one-day notice fight against lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 311, where he gave a valiant effort despite ultimately succumbing to defeat. This upcoming rematch is expected to produce fireworks, given the two fighters' distinct skill sets and unrelenting determination.

Born and raised in South Bay, Los Angeles, the 31-year-old Tijuana-born Brian Ortega boasts a commendable 16-5 record in MMA, with his victory over Moicano at UFC 214 serving as a defining moment in his career. That night, Ortega showcased his expertise in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, submitting Moicano via a third-round guillotine choke. This triumph catapulted him into the top echelons of featherweight contenders, earning him the respect of fans worldwide.

The Brazilian featherweight Renato Moicano, on the other hand, boasts an impressive 21-7-1 record, having competed against some of the sport's finest talents. Despite falling to Ortega earlier in their careers, Moicano has consistently pushed himself to the limits, pushing his physical and mental boundaries in every contest. He is set to make a highly anticipated return to the Octagon at UFC 331, where he will look to redeem himself in front of the expectant Los Angeles crowd.

The highly anticipated bout between Ortega and Moicano serves as a testament to the evolving state of MMA in Southern California.
