Broncos face uncertainty with Jonathon Cooper, but pass-rush depth inspires confidence

The Denver Broncos are approaching a pivotal moment in their offseason program, with Jonathon Cooper's status hanging precariously in the balance. Cooper, a seasoned outside linebacker, has been excused from team activities following his second arrest in a week, and faces a host of charges including felony second-degree assault and misdemeanor harassment.

While the NFL conducts its investigation, Cooper may face disciplinary measures including a potential suspension should he be found guilty of domestic violence. Broncos coach Sean Payton, ever cautious, emphasized the high bar set by the team in addressing such matters, stating, 'There's a bar that we have, and an expectation that we have, that's very high. We'll consider all of that as we continue to gather the information.

As the team heads into the second half of the offseason program, Cooper's uncertain status serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between on-field performance and off-field accountability. In this context, it's easy to forget that Cooper played a crucial role in the Broncos' defensive unit, helping to achieve league-best pass-rush numbers in 2024 and 2025.

The Broncos set a franchise record with 63 sacks in 2024 and built upon that with 68 takedowns in 2025, a 51-point differential that stands as a testament to their commitment to pressuring quarterbacks. As they seek to maintain this pace, young players on the defensive front are being asked to step up and fill the void left by Cooper's absence.

Jake Haener, Broncos' quarterback, had this to say about the situation: 'We'll just have to wait and see what happens with Jonathon. We know he's working hard, and we're going to move forward.' The team's focus remains steadfast – the pursuit of a championship.

Jonah Elliss, entering his third season, has emerged as a bright spot in the team's roster, his spin move showcasing the potential he carries for the position. Vance Joseph, Broncos defensive coordinator, believes in the young talent, pointing to the five sacks Elliss accumulated as a rookie and his impressive 14.3 percent pressure rate in 2025, according to TruMedia.

While uncertainty surrounds Cooper's status, the Broncos' depth at pass rusher provides reassurance. Que Robinson, a second-year pass rusher, demonstrated his potential with a notable presence on the field during unpadded practices. His rookie season cut short, Robinson's skills shone with four defensive snaps in the AFC Championship game against the Patriots. With his growing skillset, he's in line for significantly more playing time.

Joseph's optimism regarding Robinson reflects this sentiment: 'It looked like a guy who could be a future starter for us.' The team's decision to increase his reps will help him reach that potential, a testament to their commitment to nurturing young talent.

In light of these developments, the Broncos' young draft picks hold a pivotal role in shaping the team's pass-rush fortunes. Drew Sanders, a third-round pick in 2023, has been working tirelessly to put himself in contention for a rotational spot. After being limited by injuries, Sanders has made significant progress.

Despite Cooper's uncertain status, the Broncos' confidence in their ability to fill the void stems from their depth at pass rusher. General manager George Paton echoes this sentiment, 'We can't have enough pass rushers.' This mindset drives the team's approach, one rooted in the understanding that young talent must be nurtured to unlock its full potential.

As Cooper's case unfolds, the Broncos will continue to navigate the complex interplay between performance and accountability. Their pass-rush depth provides a reassuring foundation, a testament to the team's resilience and growth. The next chapter in the Broncos' story will unfold in the weeks to come.
