Canadian Woman Accused of Attacking Teen Trump Supporter Overstayed U.S. Visa: Husband Denies Exaggeration

Kaitlyn Tracey, a Canadian woman, has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying her visa. According to a July 15 post from ICE, Tracey entered the United States on April 14, 2024, on a visa set to expire on September 6, 2024, but failed to depart, violating the country's laws. The incident gained attention after a video surfaced of Kaitlyn Tracey allegedly slapping a teenage girl wearing pro-Trump memorabilia on a boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach during the July 4th weekend. Her husband, Matthew Geroni, is now advocating for her release, claiming that the situation has been 'blown out of proportion'.

Tracey was released from a New Jersey jail into ICE custody after being arrested and charged for the alleged assault. Geroni has taken to social media to beg for help, stating that he needs an immigration lawyer and is 'so fucking broke' but wants to figure out a way to save his wife. In a TikTok video, he shared his concerns, saying 'My wife is a Canadian citizen, and I'm an American citizen. We've been married for over three years, and I'm just doing anything I can to get her story heard and bring any help and attention to her situation so that I can get her released, even if that means back to Canada.'

Geroni counters the allegations, claiming that his wife was the one who was shoved, not him, and that they never fled from the police after the alleged assault. However, a Point Pleasant Beach police affidavit reportedly describes Tracey as the one who approached teenagers on the boardwalk, filmed herself, and then slapped one of the girls across the face before fleeing the scene. The police have charged Kaitlyn Tracey with simple assault, endangering the welfare of a child, harassment, and obstruction. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The video that captured the alleged assault is now publicized on social media, showing Kaitlyn Tracey striking the girl wearing what appears to be an America 250 shirt and blue shorts. As previously reported by National Post, a Point Beach Police Department news release states that 'officers responded to and began investigating an alleged assault of a female juvenile by an adult female suspect on the boardwalk.' The statement continued that 'The female suspect began yelling at the female juvenile over patriotic colored sweatpants with political wording. The female suspect was then seen on video striking the juvenile female, once to the body and once to the face, with an open hand. The female suspect then left the scene without being identified.'

The Canadian woman's situation has raised questions about the implications of overstaying a visa and the potential consequences of committing a crime while in the United States as an undocumented immigrant. Geroni's efforts to defend his wife and secure her release highlight the complexities of immigrant rights and the challenges faced by those who are caught in the middle of immigration laws and law enforcement. In an interview with Asbury Park Press, criminal defence lawyer Francis R. Hodgson said that Tracey was ordered released from Ocean County Jail but was taken into ICE custody, and her next court appearance is scheduled for August 4.

The incident also highlights the rising tensions between American and Canadian citizens, particularly when it comes to the issues of immigration, border security, and the presence of undocumented immigrants in the United States. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Kaitlyn Tracey's case will be resolved and what impact it will have on U.S.-Canada relations. In the meantime, the hashtag #JusticeForKate has been circulating on social media, with many people expressing support for Geroni's efforts to clear his wife's name and secure her release.
