Capcom's move comes more than two years after the publisher faced backlash for its microtransactions in Dragon's Dogma 2.
Before its launch in 2024, the fantasy role-playing game had garnered critical acclaim, but the publisher's decision to sell microtransactions that clashed with the game's challenging nature left players divided.
Now, with the upcoming release of Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, an expansion for the game, Capcom is reconsidering its approach. To prepare for the expansion, the publisher will discontinue the Deluxe Edition of Dragon's Dogma 2, along with certain DLC items.
The items set for removal include single-use in-game items for new fast-travel locations, character appearance changes, and combat revives, as well as bundles of Rift Crystals, the game's currency. Rift Crystals allow players to summon high-level pawns from Riftstones and purchase items from pawn guilds.
While some add-ons will be removed, Capcom is still planning to sell the Explorer's Camping Kit and a collection of custom sounds that add original Dragon's Dogma music to the sequel. Both items will cost $2.99, and Dragon's Dogma 2 will receive a permanent discount.
This move is significant because of the controversy surrounding Dragon's Dogma 2's microtransactions. The company's history of selling in-game conveniences for titles like the Resident Evil remakes and Monster Hunter Rise makes this reevaluation interesting.
The decision to pull these items suggests that Capcom is willing to hand out conveniences for free, especially considering recent updates to the base game that improved fast travel and added quality-of-life adjustments.
The upcoming DLC, Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, is set to launch on Oct. 9, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
Dragon's Dogma 2 remains an immersive experience, with a challenging design that sets it apart from other games in the genre.
