Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer failed in his attempt to gain unanimous consent on a bill that would permanently end the nearly $1.8 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund" the Justice Department said it would use to compensate individuals who say they suffered from government "weaponization" and the misuse of the legal system for political purposes.
Chuck Schumer called out the Trump administration, stating that Trump's actions are "swimming in the swamp," referring to Trump's exemption from tax liability and his other alleged grifts.
The fund sought to compensate individuals who participated in the January 6th breach of the US Capitol, as well as shield Trump and his family from IRS audits.
Earlier this month, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that the Justice Department would not proceed with the fund. However, Schumer expressed doubt on whether the fund was truly dead, prompting many Democratic lawmakers to question Blanche's actions.
Following the vote, Schumer stated that the Republican senators 'sided with Trump's insurrectionist army and his corrupt IRS tax exemption scheme' instead of hardworking American families.
Senator Bill Hagerty objected to Schumer's request for unanimous consent, stating that he will not seek any compensation from the fund and that the Justice Department has said they will not move forward with it.
The fund was blocked by a federal judge in Virginia, and two other lawsuits over the fund are still active and pending.
