Cristiano Ronaldo is often portrayed as an extraordinary figure, driven by his obsession with perfection. However, his former teammate Danilo offers a refreshing glimpse into the reality of sharing a dressing room with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, highlighting the humility that lies beneath his public image.
In an interview with The Athletic, Danilo shares: "People see Cristiano as an alien, but he's a normal guy who likes to laugh and have fun with his family. However, Cristiano lives for soccer, and in almost everything he does, he strives to be better every day."
While Danilo aims to highlight Ronaldo's human side, he does not downplay the professional spirit that has enabled the veteran forward to remain at the top of his game for over two decades. The defender has witnessed firsthand how Ronaldo's mentality affects those around him, creating an environment where settling for second best is not an option.
"I played with him in Madrid. In Turin, he was more experienced but still scored many goals, still professional all the time. He pushes you, makes you perform at your best in training and in matches," Danilo adds.
As Brazil looks to the future with Carlo Ancelotti, Danilo sees a striking similarity between the accomplished Italian manager and his former teammate Ronaldo. Both have achieved the pinnacle of success in the sport multiple times, yet neither shows signs of complacency or an inflated ego in the workplace.
"Ancelotti is like Cristiano. One of the most famous people in soccer, yet he goes about his day with us like a normal guy," Danilo says. "He's humble, and this is one of the most important qualities of a champion. He's won many titles, but he works as if he's won nothing."
With the ultimate goal of lifting the World Cup trophy for the first time in his illustrious career, the 41-year-old Ronaldo is currently fine-tuning his preparations for his sixth World Cup appearance.
This historic achievement of playing in six World Cup tournaments will cement his position in the record books as one of the first three players to do so in soccer history, alongside Lionel Messi and Guillermo Ochoa.
Portugal is scheduled to compete in Group K, where they will begin their campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo on June 17, followed by matches against Uzbekistan on June 23 and Colombia on June 27.
