An update was made on June 16 at 7:20 a.m. EST with new passenger reactions and data from Delta's cancellation surge.
Flight disruptions have been heavy over the last two days, with several ground stops taking place, affecting major U.S. hubs. On Sunday, Delta Air Lines was at the center of cancellations as LaGuardia Airport experienced ground delays. As a result, the airport had the most cancelled flights worldwide.
As if that wasn't enough for Delta, its other major hub, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, also faced ongoing flight disruptions on Monday. Due to weather-related issues, Delta has cancelled hundreds of flights and provided passengers with rebooking options.
A ground delay was issued at LaGuardia Airport on Sunday throughout the day, impacting hundreds of flights. The FAA intervened due to severe thunderstorms in New York City, along with damaging winds on Sunday that are expected to continue into Monday. The high-risk window was between 4 p.m. on Sunday and 2 a.m. on Monday.
As a result, LGA had the most cancelled flights for both departures and arrivals. The major Delta Air Lines hub had 119 cancelled departures, along with 105 cancelled arrivals.
It was a busy day of delays throughout the U.S. According to FlightAware, there were 10,545 delays within, into, or out of the United States on Sunday. ATL, DFW, PHL, DCA, and JFK were among the other major airports that experienced cancellation issues of their own.
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport saw 94 cancellations, while Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport saw 90 and 80 cancellations, respectively. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport saw 71 cancellations.
Looking ahead to Monday, cancellations have continued at LGA. The airport currently has 22 cancelled departures and 32 cancelled arrivals. Given Delta's high volume of flights out of LGA, the airline was impacted by the New York flight disruptions.
Delta Air Lines faced widespread flight disruptions on Sunday, affecting both of its major hubs, LGA and ATL. As a result of the disruptions, Delta had the second most cancelled flights worldwide, behind only PSA Airlines.
Many delays occurred for the carrier, at 1,455, affecting more than a third of its total flight volume (38%).
The disruptions weren't only high due to the ground delay at LGA, but issues at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport added to the uptick of cancelled flights.
ATL had 94 departure cancellations along with 61 cancelled arrivals.
Delays were also high at ATL, with 601 departures facing delays, affecting almost half of ATL flights at 48%. Like LGA, Delta's issues have continued on June 15. The carrier has by far the most cancelled flights on Monday, with 166.
On its travel alerts page, Delta Air Lines has added a "New York City Weather" advisory. The flexible rebooking is available for passengers for flights on June 14, 2026.
This change allows Delta to provide passengers with flexible rebooking for:
In this case, rebooked travel must occur on or before June 17, 2026, in the same cabin and destination.
Delta wrote, "Due to forecasted weather, travel to, from, or through the destinations listed below may be affected. Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute information about your flight plans, or get updates sent directly to your mobile device or by email with One-Time Notification."
The airline added, "When rebooked travel occurs on or before June 17, 2026 in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived. A fare difference may apply when the waiver is class to class restrictive and the original booking class is not maintained in the rebooked itinerary. When rebooked travel occurs after June 17, 2026, a difference in fare may apply."
The ground delay at LGA caused major adjustments for Delta Air Lines throughout Sunday. Issues are ongoing for the carrier, with further disruptions at its other major hub, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, on Monday.
Along with disruptions at LGA, Delta Air Lines experienced numerous cancellations on Monday due to weather in Atlanta. As a result, the carrier completed the day with the most cancelled flights worldwide, totaling 214.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian was looking for a better response from the airline to weather-related disruptions. This number shows that Delta hasn't resolved the issues just yet.
While Delta works to improve its response to weather-related issues, passengers remain frustrated. In particular, passengers are reporting recurring weather-related disruptions at LGA.
One person wrote, "I have come to the decision that if you are flying into LaGuardia in New York, that you need to be aware that that airport does not operate if it is raining, foggy, cloudy, Tuesday."
Looking ahead to Tuesday, Delta Air Lines once again has the most cancelled flights among U.S. airlines. The carrier is currently at 26 cancellations, with an uptick expected throughout the day.
