June 18, 2026 10:30 AM EDT - The nation's attention turns to the Midwest and Southeast, where severe weather tore through multiple states, leaving a trail of destruction and devastation in its wake.
A total of seven tornadoes were confirmed on Wednesday night, with reports of extensive damage and injured residents in Illinois, Iowa, and Louisiana.
The small northeast Iowa community of Harpers Ferry was one of the first areas hit, with a confirmed tornado touching down at 5:10 p.m. In central Illinois, a second tornado rolled through Charleston, leaving a path of destruction and debris scattered across the city.
Preliminary reports from the National Weather Service indicate that the tornadoes were among the strongest to hit the region in recent years, with winds reaching speeds of up to 78 mph and hail measuring up to 3 inches in diameter.
'The situation is dire, with widespread damage and power outages reported across the affected areas,' said Larry Thies, Coordinator of the Emergency Management Agency for the city of Effingham. 'We urge residents to remain indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.'
Tens of thousands of utility customers remained without power on Thursday morning, including in Illinois, where the city of Charleston declared a local state of emergency. Emergency responders were busy navigating treacherous roadways and responding to calls for assistance.
A cellphone video captured the terrifying moments when a large tornado tore through Effingham, Illinois, causing significant damage and knocking out power lines. In Montrose, a tornado reportedly injured two people, although their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The weather service issued tornado warnings for Crawford, Wisconsin, and Allamakee, Iowa, with multiple tornado sightings reported in Alabama and Kentucky. The National Weather Service has also confirmed multiple tornadoes in far-southern Louisiana, including one that appeared to touch down near the University of New Orleans.
'This is unique for June, this is unusual to have such a strong jet stream just screaming across the country, then you've got the summertime tropical moisture coming in and then some cold air coming in,' said CBS News senior meteorologist Rob Marciano. 'And winds coming at different direction, at different levels, creating that spin. So what that equates to is really the high probability of seeing, not just tornadoes, but intense tornadoes of EF2 strength or higher on the ground for a long time.'
As the affected communities struggle to come to terms with the devastation, officials are urging residents to prioritize their safety above all else. 'We're doing everything in our power to ensure the affected areas receive the necessary support and resources,' said a spokesperson for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
In the aftermath of this devastating outbreak, attention will turn to the long-term implications and potential causes. Scientists and researchers will be studying the extreme weather patterns to gain a better understanding of the complex factors at play.
A powerful tornado outbreak brought destruction and chaos to multiple states in the Midwest and Southeast, leaving thousands without power and dozens injured.
