Discovering Joy in the Process: Jurnee Smollett's Unconventional Approach to Comedy

Comedy can be a polarizing art form, with some people finding humor in even the most mundane situations and others struggling to laugh at all. For Jurnee Smollett, however, comedy has been a lifelong passion that has not only brought her joy but also allowed her to tap into her creative side. Smollett, an accomplished actress known for her roles in TV shows such as 'Friday Night Lights' and 'Under the Dome,' recently had the opportunity to work with comedy legend Larry David on his new show 'Life, Larry & the Pursuit of Unhappiness'.

In an exclusive interview with TV Insider, Smollett shared her experience working with David and how embracing improvisation has been a game-changer for her as a comedic actress. 'I think the most surprising thing for me was how much I loved the feeling of not knowing what was going to happen next,' Smollett explained. 'As an actress, you're always trying to anticipate and prepare for every possible scenario, but with improv, it's more about being in the moment and responding to whatever is happening.' Smollett credited David with pushing her to take risks and trust in her instincts, saying, 'Larry has this incredible ability to let go of the need for everything to be perfect and just relax and have fun, and that's really infectious.'

The Rosa Parks sketch, which Smollett was a part of, showcased her impressive comedic skills and left many fans wondering how she managed to master such a difficult character. According to Smollett, it was all about tapping into her own experiences and emotions. 'I drew a lot from my own life, specifically growing up as a black woman in America and dealing with the weight of expectation and the pressure to be perfect,' Smollett shared. 'I think that's what makes the Rosa Parks sketch work so well, because it's not just about the historical figure, it's about how we can all relate to feeling trapped and wanting to break free.'

One of the most striking aspects of the Rosa Parks sketch was its ability to balance humor with a deeper understanding of the human experience. Smollett attributed this to David's skill as a writer and her own willingness to be vulnerable. 'Larry's writing is just genius, and he's got this incredible ability to make you laugh one minute and then make you feel something real the next,' Smollett said. 'As for me, I just tried to stay present and focus on the moment, even when things got tough or uncomfortable.' Smollett's willingness to take risks and be open to new experiences is exactly what has made her such a beloved comedic actress.

When it comes to the future of comedy and the role that improvisation will play, Smollett is optimistic about the possibilities. 'I think the most exciting thing about improv is that it's not just about creating new material, it's about tapping into your own unique perspective and voice,' Smollett said. 'As an actress, I'm always looking for ways to challenge myself and grow as a performer, and improv has given me the tools to do just that.'

Smollett's experience working with David on 'Life, Larry & the Pursuit of Unhappiness' has left her feeling inspired and motivated to continue pushing the boundaries of comedy. As she looks to the future, Smollett knows that her work with David has been instrumental in helping her find her own unique voice and approach to the art form. 'I think that's the beauty of comedy, it's always changing and evolving, and I feel so lucky to be a part of it,' Smollett said. With her dedication to her craft and her love of taking risks, it's clear that Jurnee Smollett is a talent to watch in the world of comedy.
