The Red Dirt music scene has captivated audiences across Oklahoma with its distinct sound, a blend of country, rock, and Americana. Among the emerging bands in this scene is Keyland, led by Kyle Ross, an assistant high-school football coach and English teacher in Bixby, a Tulsa suburb. In an exclusive conversation, Ross shares his vision for Keyland and the story behind their latest studio album, Knuckle Sandwich.

When he's not on the field, Ross takes on the role of frontman for Keyland. This band has been building momentum since their formation, driven by Ross's songwriting style that hits listeners hard with emotions. Knuckle Sandwich, their third studio album, marks a milestone for Keyland. The 11-track LP sets the tone with lead single 'Cannonball,' which speaks to decision-making and the complexities of love. 'You can tell me you love me, or you can go to hell,' Ross asserts through the lyrics, painting a raw picture of life.

Ross credits his unique background as a high-school football coach and an English teacher for influencing his approach to music. 'It all kind of centers around decision-making, and indecision,' he says. 'Love looking more like a punch to the face sometimes.' This perspective reflects in the diverse styles found throughout the album, touching on country, rock, and Americana elements. With a blend of heavy-hitting guitars and poignant lyrics, Ross's compositions evoke a sense of familiarity that captures listeners' hearts.

Keyland's rise to prominence has been bolstered by supporting notable artists such as American Aquarium and the Josh Abbott Band. Their increasing popularity is evident in their growing fan base, particularly at the Mercury Lounge in Tulsa, where they've become a regular draw. In an interview, Ross mentions the importance of staying connected with their fan base by selling real, tangible vinyl copies of Knuckle Sandwich at their live shows. 'I've put music out before, but this feels different. I've got real, tangible vinyl to sell. It's been fun to blue-collar, ma-and-pa them. People are sending me their address, and I'm sending them out.'

The Sonic Ranch, a legendary analog studio located just outside of El Paso, Texas, played a significant role in shaping the sound of Knuckle Sandwich. This recording studio, where notable artists such as Koe Wetzel, Vandoliers, Waxahatchee, and American Aquarium have also recorded, is renowned for its magical ambiance. Ross and his band chose to record the album at the Sonic Ranch, where they have since become regular visitors.

This summer, Keyland will embark on a tour through Colorado, Montana, and Oklahoma, featuring notable venues like the Belly Up Aspen and the Fox Theater in Boulder. Before the road trip begins, Ross looks forward to sharing the Knuckle Sandwich experience with his growing fan base. 'It's been a pleasure to create an album that captures our sound and showcases the talents of Keyland. With the release of Knuckle Sandwich, we're eager to connect with our fans and create a lasting impression in the Red Dirt scene.'
