GREENVILLE, S.C. - A shooting incident unfolded at Haywood Mall on Saturday, leaving a trail of chaos and injury in its wake.
At approximately 1:11 p.m., a patrol officer stationed at the mall reported hearing gunshots in the vicinity of Macy's and Belk.
The officer swiftly responded to the area and discovered a young woman who had sustained a gunshot wound to her foot. Moments later, the officer located a male victim near Belk, who had suffered gunshot injuries to his shoulder and neck.
Kamari Walker, a 17-year-old, has been charged with high and aggravated assault and battery, allowing him to be treated as an adult. Additional charges against Walker are being withheld due to his age.
Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital and were listed in stable condition. Several individuals were detained, and the mall was eventually cleared with the assistance of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.
Investigations revealed that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident, stemming from an argument among acquaintances that escalated into gunfire. Unfortunately, an innocent bystander was caught in the crossfire.
Detectives are working to identify the remaining individuals involved in the altercation.
The incident occurred just a short time after Greenville City Fire Chief of Administration, Tristan Johnson, appealed to the public to avoid the area while first responders worked to contain the situation. The mall remained closed until further notice.
A temporary pickup area was established in the parking garage near Dillard's for drivers to collect stranded mall patrons. Greenlink provided an air-conditioned bus for passengers to wait in.
This disturbing incident marks a disturbing turn of events at Haywood Mall, which has experienced a string of unfortunate incidents in recent times. In light of this, we will continue to provide updates and insights as more information becomes available.
