Don't skip fruits and veggies amid cyclosporiasis outbreak: Take precautions, experts advise

The ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak across the United States has raised concerns among health experts and the general public about the safety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Despite the rising number of infections, health officials emphasize the importance of including these foods in our diet.

With over 30 states reporting cyclospora infections this year, the current data surpasses the record U.S. mark of about 4,700 set in 2019. While no deaths have been reported, the parasite can cause severe symptoms such as watery, explosive diarrhea, cramping, and nausea. The symptoms may not appear until one to two weeks after consuming contaminated food, making it challenging to determine the source of the illness.

According to Montgomery County Health Officer Kisha Davis, the cyclospora parasite can be found in cilantro, leafy greens, blackberries, and raspberries. These foods are commonly consumed during the summer months, and the parasite tends to hide in their nooks and crannies. Davis advises against cutting fresh fruits and vegetables from our diet, as they are essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Davis suggested an extra wash of produce to minimize the risk of infection. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that routine chemical disinfection or sanitization of food or water is unlikely to kill Cyclospora. Cooking can kill the parasite, and incorporating more cooked fruits and vegetables into our diet can reduce the risk of infection.

The CDC provides guidelines for handling and cooking food to minimize the risk of cyclosporiasis. Cooking fruits or veggies to a temperature at or above 158 degrees is recommended. Additionally, being mindful of where food comes from and paying attention to potential sources of contamination can help prevent the spread of the parasite.

The outbreak data from the CDC are significantly lagging state-reported totals. The agency is working closely with states to update numbers as additional cases are confirmed. It's essential to stay informed about the outbreak and take necessary precautions to protect oneself and others.

The Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) reporting on all pathogens except Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) is optional as of July 1, 2025. This means that not all foodborne illnesses may be reported, making it crucial to stay vigilant and take preventive measures.

In conclusion, while the cyclosporiasis outbreak is concerning, it's essential to maintain a balanced diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables. By taking precautions such as thoroughly washing produce, cooking food to the recommended temperature, and being mindful of potential sources of contamination, we can reduce the risk of infection and stay healthy.

The cyclosporiasis outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for continued vigilance in preventing foodborne illnesses. By working together and taking necessary precautions, we can protect ourselves and our communities from the spread of this parasite.
