On Monday night, baseball history was made at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, as two players with the same name, Max Muncy, faced off in the same game, each playing third base and batting seventh for their respective teams. For the Athletics' Max Muncy, this moment was years in the making, a culmination of a lifelong fascination with his namesake's journey from college to the pros.
The younger Muncy, a first-round draft pick by the Athletics in 2021, had been following the elder Muncy's career since he was eight years old. His grandparents would keep him updated on his namesake's progress, from college days at Baylor to being drafted by the Athletics in 2012. Muncy's admiration for the elder Muncy's success only grew stronger, and he became determined to follow in his footsteps. 'When he was in college at Baylor, my grandparents found him and they're like, 'Oh, there's another baseball player,' Muncy said in an interview. 'I knew when he got drafted. I knew when he was with the A's. I knew when they let him go and the Dodgers picked him up. All the transactions, I had known because every time I went over to my grandparents' house they would keep me updated.'
The two Max Muncys are a rare phenomenon in the baseball world. Since 1901, only two other instances of two players with the same name facing off in the same game have occurred. The first took place in 2000, when Alex Gonzalez and Álex González faced each other in a series between the Blue Jays and the Marlins, both playing shortstop and hitting seventh. In 2024, the two Max Muncys faced off in a minor league game, with the younger Muncy having the standout performance.
The elder Muncy, a two-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion, outshone his younger counterpart in their big league debut. Slugging a home run off Athletics' starter Gage Jump, the veteran Muncy finished with two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. In contrast, the younger Muncy went 1-for-3 with a walk, his one hit a grounder down the third-base line that bounced off the bag before reaching his counterpart.
As the series continues, fans will be eager to see how the two Max Muncys interact with each other on the field. After the game, the elder Muncy reflected on the experience, saying, 'It's a strange feeling, you're standing at third base and they're announcing that you're hitting, and it's not you. Thankfully, it's only just a couple of games, because I don't know if I'd ever get used to it, but yeah, strange.'
The younger Muncy, meanwhile, has a long way to go to match the veteran's experience and success. Despite this, he has a unique opportunity to learn from his namesake and forge his own path in the baseball world. As the elder Muncy noted, 'He's a great kid. His career is off to a great start. So, obviously, I'm rooting for him.'
For now, the two Max Muncys will continue to make history, their names etched in the annals of baseball lore as a testament to the power of perseverance and determination.
A rare occurrence in MLB history, two players with the same name, Max Muncy, step up to the plate, each playing 3B and batting 7th for their respective teams.
