TRIBUNPAPUATENGAH.COM, NABIRE - The 2026 World Cup frenzy has sparked a surge in enthusiasm among soccer fans in Nabire Regency, Papua Tengah.

Korwil BGN Nabire Coordinator Marsel Asyerem is also showing support for his favorite national team.

Marsel is backing Argentina and Senegal as the strongest contenders for the gold trophy.

This support is based on the composition of star players and emotional affinity, not just blind fandom.

"For me, Messi is the best soccer player in the world, and his quality is undeniable," Marsel said to Tribun-PapuaTengah.com on Thursday (6/4/2026).

Marsel believes that La Albiceleste will be able to defend their championship title.

Argentina's strength this year relies on the collaboration between senior players and talented young players in every position.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, Geronimo Rulli, Juan Musso, and Walter Benítez make up Argentina's defense.

The defensive line is guarded by Cristian Romero, Nicolás Otamendi, Nahuel Molina, Nicolás Tagliafico, Gonzalo Montiel, and Germán Pezzella.

The midfield is occupied by Rodrigo de Paul, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Leandro Paredes, Giovani Lo Celso, and Exequiel Palacios.

The forward line is strengthened by Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez, Angel Correa, Nicolás González, and Paulo Dybala.

Aside from the South American giant, Marsel is also supporting Senegal.

The African representative is seen as having a strong emotional appeal to the people of Papua.
