Dusty May Leaves Michigan for Dallas Mavericks: A New Chapter in His Coaching Career

Dusty May, the renowned head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, has decided to take his talents to the NBA, agreeing to a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. This move comes just two months after May led the Wolverines to a national championship, cementing his status as one of the most successful college basketball coaches in recent history.

May's departure from Michigan is a significant blow to the program, which had grown accustomed to his exceptional leadership and coaching prowess. During his two-year tenure, May compiled an impressive 64-13 record, including a 37-3 mark in the 2025-26 season that culminated in a national championship. His ability to develop players and build a cohesive team culture will undoubtedly be missed in Ann Arbor.

The 49-year-old coach had previously served as the head coach at Florida Atlantic, where he led the Owls to a surprise Final Four run in 2022-23. His experience and success at the collegiate level made him an attractive candidate for NBA teams, and the Mavericks ultimately won the bidding war for his services. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but it is expected to be a multi-year contract with a significant salary increase.

May's decision to leave Michigan was likely influenced by the opportunity to coach in the NBA, where he will have the chance to compete against the best teams and players in the world. The Mavericks, who have been rebuilding their roster in recent years, are hoping that May can bring his winning mentality and coaching expertise to the franchise. With a strong young core and a solid supporting cast, the Mavericks are poised to make a deep playoff run in the near future.

While May's departure is a significant loss for Michigan, the program is well-positioned to continue its success in the future. The Wolverines have a strong returning core, including guard Elliot Cadeau, who was persuaded to stay in Ann Arbor after considering entering the NBA draft. Additionally, Michigan has landed several key transfers, including former Cincinnati center Moustapha Thiam and former Tennessee forward J.P. Estrella, which should help to mitigate the loss of May's coaching expertise.

The search for May's replacement is already underway, with several candidates emerging as potential successors. Michigan will likely look for a coach with a similar profile to May, someone who can develop players and build a strong team culture. The Wolverines' athletic department has a reputation for making shrewd coaching hires, and it is expected that they will find a suitable replacement for May in the coming weeks.

As for May, he is eager to begin his new chapter in the NBA. He will face stiff competition in the Western Conference, but his experience and coaching acumen make him a strong candidate to succeed in the league. May's move to the Mavericks is a significant development in the NBA coaching carousel, and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the professional game.

Looking ahead, the Mavericks are poised to make a deep playoff run in the near future. With a strong young core and a solid supporting cast, the team has the talent and depth to compete with the best teams in the league. May's coaching expertise and leadership will be instrumental in helping the Mavericks achieve their goals, and his presence on the sideline will undoubtedly make the team a more formidable opponent.

In conclusion, Dusty May's decision to leave Michigan for the Dallas Mavericks marks a significant shift in his coaching career.
