El Niño is often associated with negative impacts such as drought and decreased rainfall.

However, in the fisheries sector, the phenomenon can also bring opportunities, particularly through increased productivity in some Indonesian waters.

Professor R. Dwi Susanto from the University of Maryland explained that during the El Niño period, the sea temperature in several Indonesian waters tends to decrease due to the movement of warm water to the eastern Pacific.

Conditions favor the strengthening of the upwelling process, which brings a rich mass of nutrients from the deeper layer of the sea to the surface.

“During El Niño, fisheries productivity in southern Java and Sumatra increases because chlorophyll concentration becomes higher,” said Dwi Susanto at the Deep-Sea Science Forum: Toward Deep Sea Mission 2045, which was organized by the Indonesian Research Center for Oceanography (PRLD) and the University of Maryland on Tuesday (2/6).

“This condition supports the availability of natural food and has the potential to increase fish stock.”

The increase in nutrient content will drive primary productivity in the waters, which forms the foundation of the marine food chain. This can be felt in terms of fish resources, the target of nautical capture.
