Elliot Page Defies Transphobic Backlash with Happiness, Success, and Love

Elliot Page has been making headlines recently, and for all the right reasons. The talented actor has been soaring above the inane transphobic backlash over his role in The Odyssey, a movie that is set to break box office records. Page walked the red carpet for the New York City premiere of The Odyssey, enjoying a lovely evening with his girlfriend, Overcompensating star Julia Shiplett, and a crew of friends including actress Peppermint, comedian James Tom, and ACLU attorney Chase Strangio. The couple's happiness was palpable, and it's clear that Page is living his best life. With a hit movie, a beautiful partner, and a fun time with his pals, Page is giving the world a masterclass in how to thrive in the face of adversity.

The initial controversy began in May when it was rumored that Page would play Achilles in the upcoming Christopher Nolan adaptation of the Greek epic. Avowed transphobes like Elon Musk took issue with the casting, as did Newsmax anchor Rob Finnerty, who described Achilles as the most famous warrior in all of history while criticizing Page. However, it's essential to remember that Homer's The Odyssey is a work of fiction, and Achilles is a figure from Greek mythology. There's no such thing as historical accuracy when you are essentially adapting a glorified fable. The backlash was swift and severe, but Page remained unfazed, focusing on his craft and delivering a performance that is set to impress audiences worldwide.

In late June, it was confirmed that Page would actually be playing Sinon, another figure in Greek mythology who is described in Virgil's Aeneid as a conniving trickster who convinces the Trojan army to let in the wooden horse with the Greek warriors inside. This news should have put the controversy to rest, but transphobes are not exactly adept at parsing through facts. Regardless of how accurately Page portrays Sinon, some online commenters will never be pleased. The leaked clips from the movie show Page's character, Sinon, dehydrated and scrambling around a beach, which is apparently activating to conservative transphobes. Many complained that Page appeared weak and not at all like Achilles, which is probably good, because Page isn't playing the mythological Greek warrior at all.

The controversy surrounding Page's casting in The Odyssey is a stark reminder of the transphobic backlash that many trans individuals face in their daily lives. It's a sad reality that trans people are often subjected to hate speech, violence, and discrimination, simply because of their gender identity. Page's experience is a testament to the resilience and strength of the trans community, and it's essential to recognize and celebrate the achievements of trans individuals. As Page navigates the complexities of his career, he remains committed to using his platform to raise awareness about trans rights and promote acceptance and inclusivity. With his girlfriend, Julia Shiplett, by his side, Page is proving that love and happiness can conquer even the most vehement of backlashes.
