F1 Driver Liam Lawson: Risk of Accidents Can't Be Completely Eliminated

F1 news: Liam Lawson believes that the risk of accidents at the starting line cannot be completely eradicated, despite various measures being taken to prevent incidents like the near-miss collision involving Franco Colapinto.

In Australia, Lawson experienced engine issues on the grid, while Colapinto had to take swift action to avoid a collision with a stranded Racing Bulls car, an incident that was one of the concerns raised by McLaren boss Andrea Stella before the season began regarding new regulations.

As part of the regulatory changes in Miami, a low-power start detection system was introduced, where cars with low acceleration would receive an automatic boost from the MGU-K to increase power. Previously, cars couldn't use electric energy below 50 kph, relying solely on internal combustion engine (ICE) power for starts and launches, with further adjustments ensuring cars didn't reach the grid with low levels of electric charge.

However, New Zealand's Lawson feels that risk will always be present during standing starts. "I mean, yeah, maybe in some ways, but you can still have an engine issue on the grid in another category and have a pretty big accident," Lawson told media, including RacingNews365.

"I think you can't eliminate all risk, but something like that is out of my control – and that's what needs to be eliminated and what we're trying to do. So, there will always be risk, but when you have something that's out of your control, something that's a failure or a problem, if we can eliminate that, that's the most important thing," he added.

The introduction of new safety measures aims to minimize the risk of accidents, but as Liam Lawson notes, some level of risk will always be inherent in the sport.
