FIA Prepares Tough Penalties for New F1 Start Rules and MGU-K Technology

MERAHPUTIH.COM - The FIA has issued a stern warning to drivers and teams who attempt to exploit the new start regulations in Formula 1.

The FIA introduced a new power unit regulation in the 2021 season, which divides energy between combustion and electric power 50-50, leading to concerns about the stability of cars during starts.

FIA Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis has cautioned drivers against misusing the new detection system, which is designed to identify cars with extremely low acceleration shortly after gear engagement.

If the system detects a failure to accelerate, the MGU-K will automatically release to ensure a minimum level of acceleration is achieved for safety.

"We've made it clear that this is not a mechanism intended to encourage people to do it deliberately for a benefit," Nikolas Tombazis said.

He emphasized that the technology is intended to improve bad starts, not make them perfect.

This preventative measure was prompted by a close call during the Australian Grand Prix when Liam Lawson's slow acceleration nearly caused a massive crash behind him.

As a solution, the FIA has also included a warning system with light flashes on the back and sides of the car to alert other drivers.

This technical proposal underwent rigorous testing during the Miami GP weekend before being implemented fully at the Canadian GP.

The FIA is confident that the system will only intervene when a car's acceleration is below a certain threshold, such as what happened to Lawson, but not for standard slow starts, like what happened to Max Verstappen in China.
