Get ready for a dose of punk rock nostalgia! The trailer for 'Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy' just dropped, and it's packed with laughs and a surprising dose of inspiration. The movie centers on a group of teenagers who snag the unbelievable chance to open for Green Day on New Year's Eve, all thanks to a demo tape. It's a wild ride inspired by Green Day's formative years, long before their multi-platinum album 'Dookie' catapulted them to global superstardom. The film is set to hit theaters on August 14th.
Filmmaker Lee Kirk, who penned and directed the comedy, drew inspiration from Green Day's early days, capturing the DIY spirit of their road trips in a van. "It's about the experience that Green Day had on the road in the early days of more of a DIY spirit," Billie Joe Armstrong told The Hollywood Reporter. "We played anywhere and everywhere, and a lot of shows would get shut down because the cops would come. But there's also the mud fight that happened at Woodstock. Lee did a great job of incorporating all of those elements that we've had in the past."
The cast features Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, and Mckenna Grace. Of course, Green Day's own Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool make appearances, alongside Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, and Fred Armisen.
Armstrong expressed his long-held desire to create a Green Day film, citing musical icons who inspired him. "I've always wanted to do a Green Day film," he shared. "God, ever since the beginning, just all my heroes have always done films, whether it was Rock 'n' Roll High School by the Ramones or [the Beatles’] A Hard Day's Night, the Who's Quadrophenia. I just wanted to do the same thing." He also mentioned plans for a film adaptation of the Broadway musical 'American Idiot' in 2025.
The film was inspired by the band's early days before they hit it big with Dookie.
