Hill Country Under Severe Flood Threat as Texas Storms Bring Heavy Rainfall

Hundreds of residents in the Hill Country face a severe flood threat after slow-moving thunderstorms dumped up to 2 inches of rain overnight, causing life-threatening flash flooding across parts of Central Texas.

According to the National Weather Service, the Flash Flood Warning issued for parts of Gillespie and Kerr counties through 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday has prompted warning messages to be distributed to motorists, reminding them to turn around and not attempt to drive through floodwaters.

The storms, which moved into the area late Tuesday, brought heavy rain that has caused numerous roadways, creeks, and low-water crossings to become impassable, especially around Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Comfort, and surrounding communities.

The Kerr County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) has issued critical information for residents and visitors to the area, cautioning them to be aware of the potential for flash flooding, especially during the night when it's harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

More than 10 cities, including Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Comfort, Ingram, Tivydale, Harper, Kerrville-Schreiner Park, Cypress Creek, Center Point, Doss, Camp Verde, and Cherry Spring, are at high risk of experiencing severe flooding, with many of these areas already experiencing flash flooding due to the heavy rain.

The Kerrville Police Department has set up barricades on numerous roads, advising drivers to use extreme caution in the area and not attempt to drive around barricades or into high water.

The NWS has placed more San Antonio area cities, including Castle Hills and Leon Valley, in the Flash Flood Warning zone, which could potentially affect hundreds of residents and commuters.

While residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid any travel unless absolutely necessary, authorities are working diligently to respond to the situation, with the Kerr County Sheriff's Office and Kerr County Emergency Management coordinating relief efforts.

In response to the severe flooding, the Kerrville Police Department reminds motorists to prioritize their safety and that of their passengers by avoiding flooded roads, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles and it's crucial to turn around when encountering flooded roads.

The situation highlights the ongoing threat of severe weather events in Texas, which underscores the need for residents to be aware of their surroundings and take necessary precautions during times of heavy rain or potential flooding.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, an average of 200 people die each year in Texas as a direct result of flooding, with many of these fatalities occurring during nighttime hours when the risk of flash flooding is highest.
