India's Quest for Prosperity Must Not Compromise its Essence, Warns Mohan Bhagwat
If India tries to emulate the development model of superpower nations like America and China, it will lose its essence, said Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat.

Speaking at the 18th BML Munjal Awards in New Delhi, Mr. Bhagwat criticised the excessive consumption-driven development model of the United States, saying if the entire world adopted the American standard of living, several Earths would not be enough to sustain itself.

The world takes this much of resources without thinking about others who also have a right to resources, he said, explaining that if India were to adopt the American standard of living, it would require six Earths to sustain itself.

Contrasting India's civilisational ethos with what he portrayed as a global order driven by self-interest, Mr. Bhagwat said countries often extend friendship and cooperation only when their strategic or economic interests are served.

Referring to the United States, he said relations of this country are frequently shaped by a clause that is 'provided that American interests are protected'. But Mr. Bhagwat cited India's assistance to neighbouring countries during crises as an example of a different approach rooted in duty and goodwill.

India had historically viewed prosperity as a means of collective welfare rather than individual accumulation, he said, cautioning that power without character could be destructive.

"The world listens to the powerful. Therefore, we need strength of every kind. But power must be accompanied by good intent and character," he said.

Ringkasan

India's journey to prosperity must be guided by restraint, ethical conduct, and concern for others, warns RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
