Israel Faces a Brain Drain as More Settlers Leave Than Move In

A new study commissioned by the Israeli parliament has found that more settlers are leaving Israel than moving in, with the brain drain threatening the country's future.

The research, published in Ynet on Wednesday, revealed that nearly half of the young, highly educated settlers, aged between 20 and 44, have left Israel in recent years.

The study found that over 210,000 settlers emigrated between 2022 and 2024, a significant increase compared to the average annual number of 40,000 between 2009 and 2021.

According to the data, during the same period, the net emigration totalled 140,000, with more settlers leaving than returning.

The research also showed that 48% of emigrants were aged between 20 and 44, which accounted for 32% of the general population.

The study revealed that highly educated settlers, with a degree in fields such as mathematics, computer science, and physics, were significantly overrepresented among emigrants, making up 33.2%, 21.5%, and 3.7% of emigrants, respectively.

Moreover, the study found that 52% of emigrants in 2024 were original Israeli-born settlers, compared to 48% born abroad.

Gilad Kariv from the Democratic Party said, 'Future scientists and entrepreneurs are leaving Israel in much higher proportions than their share in the population,' adding, 'This is a real threat to Israel's future.'
