Jannik Sinner Dominates at Monte-Carlo Masters, Aims for First Clay-Court Title

Jannik Sinner began his European clay-court campaign with a dominant performance at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where he aims to claim his first title in Monaco with confidence.

Just nine days after becoming the first player to complete the 'Sunshine Double' without losing a set, the 24-year-old carried his momentum to the clay courts with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory over Ugo Humbert.

'It was a good performance from my side,' said Sinner after improving his head-to-head record against Humbert to 2-1.

In addition to chasing his first ATP Masters 1000 title on clay this week, Sinner also has the opportunity to reclaim the No.1 ATP ranking from his rival and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

'You have to slightly change your game style, how you approach certain situations... The first tournament on clay is never easy. I came here feeling good, but at the same time, not with too many expectations,' Sinner said.

Humbert, who impressively won his opening match against 17-year-old Moise Kouame, started strongly and outmaneuvered Sinner in the opening game's rallies.

However, the Italian quickly found his rhythm, unleashing his signature power and precision from all areas of the court.

Sinner cruised through the first set and was almost unbeatable in the second, losing just six points to secure his place in the third round at Monte-Carlo for the fourth consecutive year.

The world No.2 has now won 36 consecutive sets at Masters 1000 level, following his titles in Paris last season and in Indian Wells and Miami last month.

With the No.1 ranking also within reach, Sinner is favored to meet Alcaraz for the first time this season in the final.

Berrettini, a former world No.6 who has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, now faces a crucial second-round match against seventh seed Daniil Medvedev.

If the Italian fails to advance, he will drop out of the top 100 for the first time since April 2024.
