Tereza Valentova Outlasts Elina Svitolina in an Uplifting Thriller at Cincinnati
Elina Svitolina vs Tereza Valentova · Round 2 · Cincinnati Tennis.com - A nail-biting encounter...

The thrilling match in Monaco on the evening of April 12 marked a rematch between the two players since their final ATP Finals showdown in November 2025. This encounter not only determined the champion of the Kepangeran Monaco but also directly secured Sinner's position at the top of the ATP rankings. With unwavering determination, Jannik Sinner emerged victorious after a nail-biting 2 hour 15 minutes match.
Sinner's win marked him as the second player in history, after Novak Djokovic in 2015, to capture three consecutive Masters 1000 titles at the start of the season in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo.
At 24 years old, Sinner officially reclaimed the world number one spot on April 13, for the first time this year.
The final match took place on the Rainier III court amidst windy conditions, making it challenging for both players to maintain consistency. In the first set, Sinner displayed greater poise in the tie-break decisive tie-break. Although Alcaraz started strongly, he made a crucial double fault on the decisive point, allowing Sinner to take the set 7-6.
In the second set, Alcaraz quickly secured a break and was leading 3-1, but he failed to sustain his accuracy, committing 45 errors throughout the match. Sinner, despite feeling fatigued, continued to apply pressure, winning five of the last games to seal the victory 6-3.
Sinner's performance has been exceptional, with 17 consecutive wins across all levels and a 22-match unbeaten streak in Masters 1000 events. Furthermore, he had previously never lost a single set in Masters 1000 events in Paris, Indian Wells, and Miami, making him the first player to complete the Sunshine Double (Indian Wells, Miami) without dropping a set.
With his Monte Carlo title, Sinner now holds a total of eight Masters 1000 titles, tying Alcaraz's record.
Post-match, Sinner reflected: 'Returning to the number one ranking means a lot to me. I'm thrilled to have won the clay-court title, something I've never done before.'
Meanwhile, Alcaraz, though defeated, showed immense respect for his opponent: 'What Sinner is doing right now is really impressive. Only one player had won the Sunshine Double and Monte Carlo before, and now Sinner is the second. It's incredible, and I just experienced firsthand how difficult it is.'
Italian tennis sensation Jannik Sinner makes history by claiming the Monte Carlo Masters 2026 title.
