The news sent shockwaves throughout the tech community, with leaders and politicians alike expressing their condolences and paying tribute to Baer's remarkable contributions to the city's thriving tech scene.
As reported by the Austin American-Statesman, Baer's private plane crashed on Loop 20 in Laredo, a few miles south of the city's airport, around 10 p.m. The incident was captured on video by the Laredo Police Department, showing the plane hitting a car before coming to rest on a highway barrier.
Baer was a stalwart figure in the Austin tech community, having founded Capital Factory in 2009. An entrepreneur in residence for the Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Austin, Baer was known for his boundless enthusiasm and commitment to helping others succeed.
The plane, a Cessna 680A, was flying from Los Cabos, Mexico, to Austin when it encountered mechanical difficulties. The pilots attempted to make an emergency landing, but the plane ultimately crashed several miles short of the airfield, killing Baer and leaving five others injured.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the FBI and National Transportation Safety Board.
