In a candid and introspective interview, Madonna opened up about the unfortunate fate of her highly anticipated biopic. The project, which had garnered significant attention in the industry, was put to rest due to the pop star's disagreements with Universal Pictures over budget and creative differences.
'I've had an extraordinary life. I've had a huge life, so I needed a big budget. You know what I mean?' Madonna said, emphasizing the necessity of a substantial budget to do justice to her life story. She revealed that she had spent several years developing the project, writing the script, and collaborating with producers at Universal to ensure the film's success.
The budget dispute was just one of the many challenges Madonna faced during the production process. She recalled one particular instance where Universal showed skepticism about her decision to move the production to Serbia, citing concerns that she wouldn't stay in the country for more than four days. Madonna firmly defended her choice, pointing out that her life has been marked by struggle and survival, and that Serbia was a meaningful choice for the story.
The biopic, which had been in the works since 2020, had already begun to fall apart by 2025, but Madonna revealed that the problems started long before that. 'You have to meet a lot of writers and find the right showrunner, and I couldn't find one,' she said, adding that the process took another eight or nine months, during which she had to continue working on other projects to sustain herself.
The project was initially intended to be a feature film, but due to creative differences and changes in Universal's priorities, it was transformed into a limited series. Madonna, however, felt that this change required an entirely new script and a different creative vision, which ultimately led to the project's demise.
Much of the biopic's progress had stalled, with only a short film and an album to accompany the project's release. Madonna and Julia Garner, who was set to star in the biopic, are now working on a new project with a story arc based on their previous collaboration, adding another layer of nostalgia to the cancelled biopic.
Madonna reveals the true reason behind the cancellation of her biopic, citing budget disputes with Universal Pictures and differences in creative vision.
