Manuel Neuer: The Unstoppable Last Line Of Defense

The German national team is set to face off against the Ivory Coast on Saturday evening at Toronto. With qualification for the 16th round and the top spot in the group on the line, they'll rely on their veteran goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, to lead the way.

At 40 years old, Neuer will make history by participating in his 21st match in the World Cup finals, breaking the record currently co-held by Hugo Loris. 'Manu is the best in the world,' praises his Bayern and national team colleague, Jonathan Tah. 'It's special to have a goalkeeper like him behind me. It's also a source of pride to play alongside him.'

Manuel Neuer began his World Cup journey in 2010 in South Africa. Two years ago, the Bayern goalkeeper decided to retire from the national team to focus on his club career. However, this season, he has repeatedly stated that he would not be leaving the international scene, and his ambition to lift the World Cup for the second time, after 2014 in Brazil, prompted him to make a comeback.

Although Neuer expressed his intentions to retire after the tournament, he expressed his excitement about being part of this new adventure. 'For me, it's almost certain that this will be my last tournament,' he confessed during a press conference on Thursday. 'It's an incredible gift to be back on this journey. Winning the trophy a second time would be truly special. If I didn't believe, I wouldn't be here and sitting in front of you.'

Standing tall on the field, forming a cross shape against attackers with his body, and using his foot like an outfield player, Manuel Neuer has revolutionized the goalkeeper position. His legacy will remain regardless of the outcome for Germany in this World Cup.

The Seleção of Brazil secured a convincing win against Haiti and took control of the group C in this 2026 World Cup.
