The Dutch racer has been contemplating stepping away from the sport for some time, feeling a lack of ambition to continue.
He also believes that the regulations set by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for the 2026 Formula 1 season are detracting from the core essence of racing.
The four-time world champion has been one of the most vocal critics of the FIA's policy to increase power in Formula 1 for the current season.
Verstappen voiced his criticisms even while testing the simulator for the 2026 car, finding the increased power detrimental to competitive balance.
He commented, "Always starting something feeling better in the morning, then everything goes less well."
Furthermore, Verstappen seems to be struggling with Red Bull's development progress, which has not been optimal recently.
He has also faced challenges keeping up with the dominant performance of the Mercedes duo, Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, in the last three Formula 1 races.
Currently, Max Verstappen holds ninth place in the provisional standings with a total of 12 points.
