Jakarta (ANTARA) - Red Bull's Max Verstappen has started thinking about an early retirement from Formula 1, citing a loss of enthusiasm and motivation to compete at the top level.
Verstappen admitted that he now wakes up every morning, only to convince himself to continue racing in the high-octane sport, which has lost its thrill for him.
“Every morning I wake up, I tell myself, and I try to stay in Formula 1,” Verstappen said, as quoted from Motorsport on Wednesday.
The four-time world champion from the Netherlands has been contemplating an early exit for a while, as he no longer feels driven to compete.
Furthermore, Verstappen expressed his discontent with the FIA's new regulation for the 2026 season, saying it detracts from the essence of racing.
Verstappen, who is one of the most vocal critics of the FIA's decision to introduce more powerful engines, believes the change has created an unfair competition.
“Starting each day feeling better, only to have things go badly,” Verstappen said.
Currently, Verstappen is struggling to regain his magic with Red Bull, which is also facing difficulties in developing its cars.
In the last three races, the 28-year-old driver has failed to challenge the Mercedes duo of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.
As a result, Verstappen is currently sitting in ninth place with just 12 points.
