Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen is contemplating whether to continue racing in Formula 1 next season or not. He's unhappy with the car's performance under the new regulations.
Verstappen expressed this sentiment after finishing eighth in the recent Japanese GP at Suzuka on March 29. Although he hasn't secured a podium yet, he's gathered 12 points. However, he's trailing behind Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who's currently leading the standings with 60 points.
Verstappen is more concerned with the car he's driving this season. Under the new regulations, the design prioritizes electric power over the previous setup. Verstappen has criticized this change, calling it more like a Formula E car on steroids.
A day before the GP, Verstappen admitted he was feeling more than frustrated with his current situation. After the race, he emphasized that he's not enjoying his job.
"When you're in seventh or eighth position and you don't enjoy the entire formula behind it, it doesn't feel natural for a driver. Of course, I'm trying to adapt, but the driving style isn't enjoyable. It's actually opposite to driving principles. At some point, it's not what I want to do anymore," he said, cited by The Athletic.
When asked if this was related to his potential retirement from F1 at the end of the season, Verstappen replied, "That's what I said. I'm considering everything in the paddock here."
"Personally, I'm really happy. You also look forward to 24 races. This time, 22. Normally 24. And then you just think if it's worth it or if I'd rather be at home with my family. Meet my friends more often when you're not enjoying racing?"
Verstappen's contract with Red Bull is until 2028, but he's reportedly allowed to leave at the end of the year if he's not in the top two by the summer break.
"(Red Bull) feels like a second family. Unfortunately, as soon as I sit in the car, it's not the most enjoyable thing. I'm trying. I remind myself to try and enjoy it every day. It's just very difficult," he explained.
