While Lando Norris managed to challenge the dominant Mercedes cars in Barcelona, Oscar Piastri had another uneventful weekend, struggling to comprehend the substantial performance gap between him and his teammate.
Piastri conceded that he doesn't truly understand why he's trailing behind Norris. The Australian driver admitted to trying various setup combinations and encountering several issues.
Piastri acknowledged that Norris was able to extract the most from the McLaren package throughout the Spanish GP weekend, giving Mercedes a run for their money in the race.
The Australian driver believes McLaren is being pushed beyond its comfort zone in the pursuit of performance. "We're constantly missing a tenth or two of a second. In my case, much more," Piastri stated.
Piastri emphasized that when the team tries to find the last bits of speed, the car starts to feel uneasy, and pushing it into a range it doesn't like to work in inevitably creates additional complications.
The struggles have not gone unnoticed. Former world champion Nico Rosberg believes Piastri's reputation in the paddock is beginning to suffer, having soared to the role of title favourite at some point just a year ago.
Not going too well for him as of late, Rosberg shared, "His market value has taken a bit of a plunge in the last weeks and months." He added that with the new regulations and cars, Piastri is not feeling comfortable yet, and it's strange that he needs to work on that now because he's falling down.
Another former champion, Jacques Villeneuve, views the current trend as a continuation of a decline that began during the second half of last season.
Villeneuve noted that Piastri was the talk of the paddock halfway through the season and then his form went down, and he hasn't recovered. It's really odd, he added.
Villeneuve said Formula 1 quickly forgets past achievements and pointed out that you're only as good as your last race.
